About My Village.
Ezhimala ,with all it's historic and geographical importance, stretches it's dale on south west and immerse it's edge into the Arabian sea .It produces a picturesque of invariable greenness and embankment being patted by waves of Arabian Sea , tranquility which prevails in the landscape is unique and gives the countryside immense placidness . My village , Vadakumbad is part of this beautiful countryside and it situates in northern side of Ramanthali panchayath in kannur Dist of Kerala.
The royal history of Ezhimala dates back to the regimes of Chera , Chola , Muzhika and chalukkiya dynasty and it culminates with Kolathiri Rjavamsham. Sangakala writings vividly depicts the ancient history of the hill with all it's glory and tradition and the world came to know the prosperity and great royal traditions of Ezhimala when king Nandan , great warrior , had defeated Chera troops in Pazhi war. Nanda reign was an era of peace and prosperity . Subsequently in Vaakai Pundurai war Cheras regained control of Ezhimal and established their rule again.
In 13th Century , the great traveler, Marcopolo wrote about Ezhimala which gives a clear cut depiction of Ezhimala History and it's royal roots. View of this hill off the coast of Arabian sea helped the navigators to identify this particular region with ease and merchandize which followed such navigation, flourished afterwards giving the region economical boost .. Ettikulam and Palakod were the hub of such merchandize. There is also evidence of Kollathiri reign in Ezhimala which ended when Portuguese invaded the region and established their control over it. They had built a chain of fortress across the coast of Arabian Sea which included one in Ezhimala. The epithets seen at many places in the panchayath and the ancient temples located around give implication of ancient prosperity and great tradition of this region which can not be ignored.
The history of the region can not be completed without a brief narration of 17 martyrs who rest in peace in Vadakumbad Juma Masjid graveyard. They had sacrificed their lives defending Portuguese invasion and atrocities unleashed by the Portuguese. Without discrimination , all sectors of the society visit the 17 martyrs tomb and all consider visting it as sublime and sacred deed.
In our age, the geographical importance of Ezhmala has led to the acquisition of a large part of the region by the government for establishing biggest Naval Academy in Asia .
If unity in diversity is said about India it is more specific about my village. Communal harmony and fraternity among different religions are deep seated values which remain intact in the region. Vadakumbad Juma Masjid and nearby Kuruvanttata temple set a perfect example of secularism and communal harmony.
Total population of Ramanthali Panchayath consists of 11753 men and 11936 women and it's boundaries are on North Kavvayi Puzha , East Puthiya Puzha , West & South Arabian Sea.
